Kibble & Kidney Disease

Inspired by the fabulous, continuing education provided by Dr. Conor Brady, author of the best-selling book on dog Nutrition "Feeding Dogs", here are the highlights from his recent post on Instagram, which is important for all dog lovers to know.

He cites 8 reasons why feeding kibble to your dog (or dry food to your cat) causes kidney disease and doesn't cure the problem either:

  1. It's dry.

  2. High carb diets are directly linked to struvite crystal formation. Remember that, even if "meat" or "meat meal" is listed first, it does not mean that the diet contains mostly meat. It doesn't. There is NO FRESH MEAT in kibble, and when all of the other filler ingredients like corn, beans, lentils, rice, potatoes, beet pulp, etc. etc. are figured in, a kibble (or even a canned diet) contains mostly cheap carbs. This is what Dr. Brady is getting at. It's true for ALL KIBBLE and many other types of dog food, even the refrigerated ones.

  3. Grain mold is linked to kidney disease in dogs.

  4. Kibble contains excessive amounts of SALT.

  5. Kibble-fed dogs suffer from more immunological stress and immune reactions.

  6. Kibble fed dogs build up tartar and gum disease, very bad for kidneys.

  7. Meat meal (dried inferior sources of meat and other animal body parts) are difficult for a dog to digest. They digest FRESH MEAT the easiest.

  8. Kibble contains a host of chemicals, including preservatives, further stressing kidneys.

The studies are showing more and more reasons that we should STOP feeding dogs we love kibble.
